A Tribute to Bill Watterson
Creator of Calvin and Hobbes
Here's a timeline of Watterson's life:
- 1958 - Born in Washington D.C.
- 1964 - Moves with family to Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
- 1966 - Created his first cartoon at age 8.
- 1976 - Enrolled at Ohio's Kenyon College. Spent next 4 years drawing political cartoons for The Keyon Collegian campus newspaper.
- 1977 - During his sophmore year, he painted a copy of Michelangelo's Creation of Adam on his dorm room ceiling.
- 1980 - Upon graduating college he was offered a job as an editorial cartoonist at the Cincinnati Post.
- 1981 - In less than year was unemployed and living at home with his parents.
- 1981 to 1985 - Watterson sent his strips to countless newspapers and received nothing but rejection slips.
- 1985 - Universal Press Syndricated bought his new strip, Calvin and Hobbes giving 27 year old Watterson a national audience.
- 1986 - Became the youngest cartoonisht ever to receive the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award - the industry's highest honor.
- 1995 - Announced to the heartbreak of fans, that he was ending the strip, saying he had done all he could with Calvin and Hobbes.
- December 31, 1995 - The final strip of Calvin and Hobbes was ran.
- 2000 - When his hero Charles Schulz died, Watterson broke his post-C&Hpublic silence to pen a tribute to his hero for The Los Angeles Times.
- 2011 - Participated in a public art exhibition and auction in support of the Team Cul de Sac charity for Parkinson's research.
- 2014 - Provided what he called "a few sentences" of voiceover remarks for Stripped (2014), cartoonist Dave Kellet's documentary about comic strips. He also illustrated the poster for the film.
- 2014 - In effort to raise money to fight Parkinson's disease, Watterson secretly collaborated with cartoonist Stephan Pastis on three strips of Pearls Before Swine. His involvement wasn't revealed until June when after the strips were published.
- 2023 - Watterson released his first major book, entitled The Mysteries.
